Instead we got something of a remake of the first film's plot here, with Tom Tyler (who would also star as Captain Marvel and the Phantom in their early screen appearances) playing the Mummy, who is now known as Kharis. Gone was director Karl Freund, star Karloff, the intricate make-up of Jack Pierce (though the revered monster maestro was present - if un-credited), and even the character of Imhotep himself. The Mummy's legacy continued in 1940 with this non-sequel to the Boris Karloff classic. That movie wasn't quite as good, but Stephanie Zimbalist was equally hot. This flick was later remade into the Chuck Heston-starrer, The Awakening. Turns out the bling is cursed, and the girl is possessed by the evil princess.
He snatches a huge ring from her gnarly severed hand, and later gives it to his lovely daughter (Valerine Leon). He finds her body perfectly preserved with the exception of a severed hand. This mummy movie from the early 1970s may not have a guy walking around wrapped up in gauze, but it does meet our alternative requirement with the inclusion of a buxom, reincarnated Egyptian princess! Yes, it's a low-budgie production from Hammer Film, but the movie really looks much more expensive than it was.īlood is actually a semi-adaptation of Bram Stoker's The Jewel of the Seven Stars and centers on a professor (Andrew Keir) who discovers the sarcophagus of an Egyptian princess. Naturally, the townspeople don't take too kindly to this, and they form a torch-wielding mob to burn Kharis up. He also apparently develops a thing for blondes, as he kidnaps the beautiful fiancé of Banning's son. This installment is especially worthy of note as it's the first to have starred Lon Cheney, Jr., who had played the iconic role of The Wolf Man for Universal in 1941, as Kharis the mummy.Īs it turns out, Kharis was not entirely done away with in the previous installment, and he returns again to take revenge on Stephen Banning (Dick Foran) and his family in Mapleton, Massachusetts where he takes up residence in the town's graveyard. The Mummy's Tomb is the 1942 sequel to The Mummy's Hand (more on that one in a moment). And you know what else? It's waaay better than Van Helsing. All the other classic movie monsters are along for the ride - Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, and Gill-Man. Sure, the film features more than just The Mummy, but our bandaged buddy has a key role to play when the evil crew come up against a group of treehouse-hanging pre-teens.
But there was another, scarier adolescent flick unleashed upon kids in 1987: The Monster Squad.
The Goonies, most would argue, is the ultimate example of this. a decade that some might consider the golden age of adolescent movies.
